Mechiras Chametz 2

by admin on March, 30, 2020 in Blog - Comments Off on Mechiras Chametz 2

Chometz may not remain in one’s possession over Pesach.  A person who owns any Chometz that which cannot be removed or destroyed in time, may arrange for their chometz to be sold to a non-Jew. [Any chometz remaining in the possession of a Jew during Pesach may not be used, eaten, bought or sold even after Pesach.]

The sale of chometz is not just a mere ritual, but is carried out in a legal manner by a Rabbi. Since there are many legal intricacies in this sale, only a competent Rabbi should be entrusted with its execution.  The Rabbi is empowered to conduct this sale on behalf of any individual wishing to sell chometz. After Pesach the non-Jew may be approached by the Rabbi to sell the chometz back to the original owners.

Normally, we are meticulous (mehader) to meet the Rabbi in person and formally authorize him to arrange the sale for us.

However, in this medical emergency it is impossible to set up a safe system for in-person Sale of Chometz without endangering the community further. The Rabbonim have therefore instructed that all Mechiras Chometz this year shall be by electronic authorization.

Note: Chometz utensils not thoroughly clean should also be included in the sale.
The chometz, which is sold, must be stored away and locked up in such a manner that it should not come to be accidentally used. The cabinet or room is also legally rented to the non-Jew over the Pesach period, so that his chometz does not lie in the Jew’s property.

When you click below on the name of the Rabbi through whom you wish to sell your Chometz, you will be directed to an online form to fill in your information and the locations included in the sale. Please complete the form fully. There will also be an option if you wish to make the customary payment to the Rov through Paypal or Cashapp.

Please submit the form online before Tuesday Night, eve of 14 Nissan April 7, 2020 at  8.00PM

Pesach is a very busy time for the Members of the Beis Din. It is also a time when many community members take the opportunity to give funds to the Rabbis in recognition of the service they provide. Instructions are provided below and on the Mechira page for each of the Rabbonim.

You can send funds for Rabbi Schwei by mail at 796 Montgomery St Brooklyn NY 11213, through Cashapp at cash.app/$RabbiSchwei or through Paypal at [email protected]

You can send funds to Rabbi Osdoba by mail at 602 Montgomery St Brooklyn, NY 11213 or through Cashapp at cash.app/$mechiraschometz and at [email protected]

You can send funds to Rabbi Braun by mail at 1214 Carroll St, Brooklyn, NY 11225, through Cashapp at cash.app/$RabbiBraun , or through Paypal at [email protected]

Thank you all for your collaboration.

May we be zoche in the immediate redemption with Moshiach!

New YAM Building After several years of sharing a space with the Shalom Center on Albany Avenue, the youth programs of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council have finally found a place to call their own. The new store front premises of 268 Brooklyn Avenue, at the corner of Lincoln Place are now if full operation. Situated just around the corner from Oholei Torah, at the center of the Crown Heights community, the new location is a second home to Mesivta-age students, providing weekly social gatherings and exciting, creative activities such as photography, art, crafts and music.

According to 20-year-old Shmuel Maytales who has been a member of youth program since 2006, “The after school program has been a wholesome experience. I’ve been able to build my skills and confidence, through choosing from a variety of engaging projects and activities.”

The program is a project of the CHJCC to provide support and guidance to Crown Heights teenagers through fun, engaging, recreational and educational mediums. Some nightly activities include a Thursday night beis medrash where volunteers and participants enjoy one-on-one learning followed by food, fun and a farbrengen; GED classes; Life skills training courses; along with art and musical outlets such as mosaic art projects, drawing lessons and music lessons.

“Everyone is welcome to stop by and check out our programs,” says Rabbi Levi Kaplan, CHJCC Director of Youth and Prevention Programming. “We look forward to repeating our highly successful Chaburas Hakayits [summer break] program with evening programs for day camp counselors this summer, and to creating more programs for the benefit of young people in our community.”

What is Crown Heights Central?

by admin on November, 17, 2011 in Blog, Home Slideshow - Comments Off on What is Crown Heights Central?

This is a press release we have sent to the local new sites about our recent changes. Read all about it!

You may have noticed that the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council at 387 Kingston Ave has been going through some changes lately. Over the summer, the waiting area of the social services center has been completely cleaned up, with new seating and lighting replacing the old dusty furniture and bulletin boards. This Tuesday, a brand new awning  declaring Crown Heights Central, the new face for the social services arm of the CHJCC, has gone up as well.

The name and exterior facelift is a reflection of internal changes and goals of the CHJCC, explains CHJCC Executive Director Eli Cohen, “We recognize that there’s been a breakdown of communication between the CHJCC and the Crown Heights community. Right now, we’re working towards a new era of transparency through opening up lines of communications, and making a positive impact on the lives of Crown Heights residents.”

The name Crown Heights Central was chosen for this new initiative, to convey that this is the central address, in person, by phone, and online, that Crown Heights residents can come to for information about programs and services that are available to them in the community.

The first project they undertook was renovating the storefront in an effort to make the Crown Heights Central a more welcoming place for our community members to utilize their social services. Next, they tackled their online presence: “We want to be where our community is, and we’re increasingly seeing them online,” said Cohen. With that in mind, they have just launched a website www.crownheightscentral.org, that in addition to giving full overviews of their services, includes a full listings of community resources and useful information. It will also host neighborhood updates like alternate side parking updates, school closings, and community events.

Crown Heights Central can also be found on Facebook and Twitter. Crown Heights Central plans on utilizing social media, not only to share relevant information, but also to start a conversation with the community. “We’re just starting on this journey and want to hear from the community on how we’re doing.” Cohen said. “If there’s something we can do to improve our services, please let us know!”

The Crown Heights Central is also working on beefing up their current list of services – the newest program, Legal Services, provides free legal advice and representation in the areas of immigration, custody or child support, credit card debt, foreclosures, evictions and fair hearings on denial or reduction of benefits. Currently, a volunteer program is in the works, hoping to connect local organizations with volunteers looking to give back to their community.

The work on the storefront and website was completed by entirely Crown Heights businesses, including Adar Construction, for the storefront renovations, the new awning done by Sign It INC, and website done by Star City Media

Crown Heights Central would love to hear your feedback and suggestions. Please contact them via the Suggestion Box on their site: www.crownheightscentral.org, on Facebook or Twitter.

The CHJCC Weatherization Program

by admin on October, 31, 2011 in Blog - Comments Off on The CHJCC Weatherization Program

The Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) funds work which  lowers families’ heating and electrical bills, improves heating and lighting, and provides new windows and refrigerators. The program is also an important source of jobs for the community.

In 2011, the funding of the Program tripled and the CHJCC was recognized as one of the top performing agencies in the State, receiving State level recognition for quality. CHJCC was authorized to receive an additional $2.5MM of funding that brought even more benefit to the community. In the last year more families’ quality of life was improved and more jobs have been created than in any of the previous thirty years.  2013 is a low funding year for WAP, but in the future CHJCC  is looking at ways to bring the same benefits it has brought to multi-family dwellings to residents living in single family homes.

To find out whether you qualify for the program and to learn how it works, call our Weatherization Director, Avi Kamman, at 718-771-1900, exension 7717.
